Choosing Joy Over Holiday Blues
I was driving today and experienced a moment of such authentic peacefulness, that I found myself thanking God out loud for the pure joy of the emotion. It was one of the deepest feelings of overwhelming gratitude and hopefulness I have ever experienced. And it serves as a testimony of my personal growth and increased faith.
For me, the holidays have always been a period of fluctuating emotional highs and lows. I miss loved ones no longer here more intensely. Instead of being liberating and energizing, alone time is suddenly empty and lonely. Worst, I become more cognizant of and very sensitive about every facet of my life not exactly as I desire it to be. Anyone experiencing this hodgepodge of emotions called the holiday blues, understands that it is the thief of holiday cheer. So, I am sure that you can appreciate how thankful I am for the shift in emotions this year.
To anyone already in that dark place or can feel the shadow looming, I offer encouragement. I understand that you may be feeling lost, unseen, empty or even angry. Just trust that those feelings are temporary. Do not ignore your hard days. You cannot work through an emotion without acknowledging the feeling. Fight the urge to withdraw into yourself and allow loved ones to support you. Those moments in the light are exactly what you will need to pull you out when the darkness returns.
Gratitude is the gateway to joy and know that no matter where you are in life, there is always something to be grateful for. By allowing yourself to appreciate what was and what is, you are breaking free from past hurts and disappointments, and creating space to welcome what will be.
